A cotton, a colour

A thick cloth first woven around Nanjing, and the soft chamois yellow it came in. By 1800 it was everywhere, from French uniforms to summer trousers, and French still has a word for the colour.

Paid in silver

Europe once paid for Chinese porcelain in silver, and spent a century trying to copy it. Good workshops in China still make beautiful things. What is hard today is telling them apart from the rest. That is the work we do for you.

  • We choose every piece ourselves.
  • Every product page says where it ships from and how long it takes to reach you.
  • Shipping is part of the price. Import duties, where your country charges them, are the only extra.
  • If a piece arrives broken, wrong or missing a part, send us a photo within 14 days and we will replace it or refund you.

Still at sea

In 1752 the Dutch ship Geldermalsen sank on its way home from Canton, its porcelain buried under tea. When it was found again, the sale was called the Nanking Cargo.

Ours is lacquer, screens and tea ware. We are working with furniture workshops and tea-ware makers in China on our first pieces. They will appear here first.
